Description
I relied heavily on the "Jitter" function to get that chalk-like texture and used a few curved lines to define shape and what direction the gnarled roots contort in... I should've searched for tree images as references before painting.

That is a really appealing palette. I like your lighting too, feels like the tree's in a bio-fluorescent bog.
Also if you want more of a chalky texture a good technique is to use a texture to control the layer transparency (and additionally overlay a texture ontop).
I just read your other pic too and I think the whole 100 speed paints thing is a fantastic idea! How long are you giving yourself per piece? And is there anything in particular you're trying to practice?
